Why Do I Have Cockroaches Even Though My House Is Clean?

Updated August 20265 min readBy ART Hygienic Service, Oman
Even a spotless home gets cockroaches because cleanliness isn't how they get in. Cockroaches enter through drains, pipe gaps, cracks and shared walls from neighbouring units, and they survive on tiny traces — grease film, crumbs, soap, cardboard glue and moisture. Cleaning reduces how many can thrive, but sealing entry points and treating harbourage is what actually keeps them out.

How they get in — no invitation needed

Cockroaches don't appear because a home is dirty; they arrive from outside and from neighbours. Common routes into an Oman apartment include floor and sink drains, gaps around water and gas pipes, cracks in walls and skirting, cardboard boxes and grocery bags, and shared wall voids between units. In apartment blocks especially, they travel through shared drainage — so your flat can be immaculate and still get re-infested from next door.

What feeds a roach in a clean home

Cockroaches need almost nothing. A thin grease film behind the cooker, crumbs in a toaster, pet food, soap residue, the glue on cardboard, and — most importantly — water from a dripping tap or damp sink are enough. They can live weeks on traces you'd never notice.

What actually keeps them out

  • Seal gaps around pipes, drains and skirting
  • Keep drains covered and sinks dry overnight
  • Fix leaks — remove the water and you remove the roach
  • Store food sealed; clear grease behind and under the cooker
  • Treat the hidden harbourage with gel bait, not just visible surfaces

Why cleaning alone won't finish the job

Cleaning removes food and makes your home less hospitable, but it can't reach the colony hiding in wall voids, behind appliances or inside electronics — and it can't stop new roaches arriving through drains. That's why the reliable fix is professional cockroach treatment: a residual spray for the exposed population plus gel bait that the roaches carry back to their hidden harbourage.

The apartment reality

If you're in a flat, expect re-entry from shared drainage no matter how clean you are. Quarterly treatment is what turns "clean but still seeing roaches" into "gone".

Frequently asked questions

Does a clean house prevent cockroaches?
It helps but doesn't prevent them. Roaches enter through drains, gaps and shared walls, and survive on tiny traces. Sealing entry points and treating harbourage matters more than cleaning alone.
Where are the cockroaches coming from?
Usually drains, pipe gaps, cracks, cardboard, and shared walls from neighbouring units — especially in apartment buildings with shared drainage.
How do I stop them for good?
Seal entry points, fix leaks, keep drains covered, and get professional spray + gel treatment. In apartments, quarterly service prevents re-infestation.
Are these German cockroaches?
The small roaches that thrive indoors in kitchens are usually German cockroaches, which breed fast and hide in warm, damp harbourage — exactly why gel bait works better than spray alone.
